Floyd Vance
Wimberly
AUG 15, 1948 - MAY 22, 2019
Floyd was born in Pompano Beach, Florida, to John Wimberly Sr. and Clara Mae Frazier Wimberly.
He attended Rev. Miller Kindergarten and Blanche Ely Elementary School. He was a proud graduate of the Blanche Ely High School Class of 1966 (The Outlaw Class). Floyd majored in Sociology at Bethune-Cookman College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
In July 1985, after inquiring about a young lady across the street, a relative introduced Floyd to Paula Willis. After meeting her, he knew he was ready to settle down and start a family. On April 2, 1988, Floyd and Paula were married. To this union, two sons were born—Martavious and Denzel—and two daughters, Nichelle Jacobs-Simmons and LaSalle Wimberly, became part of their family.
Floyd worked for several establishments throughout his career, including Holy Cross Hospital, J. Bryon’s Department Store, Sunshine Health Clinic, and Logistics Leaseway. However, his longest tenure was as a Broward County FHSAA Football Official Referee, a role he served in for more than 30 years. He retired in March 2009.
Floyd was a lifetime member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where he was baptized at an early age under the leadership of Reverend D.V. Miller. He continued his membership under the late Dr. R.W. Williams, and after his passing, Floyd remained dedicated under the leadership of Pastor Reverend Dr. Robert C. Stanley. He actively served in the Hopewell Male Chorus, and his love for the church was evident through his unwavering faithfulness, duties, and responsibilities.
In 1978, Floyd was initiated into the Pompano Beach Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., as part of the "Atlas 17" line. He was also a member of Pompano Beach Lodge 409 and served as a board member for BCOA, the Kendall Lakes Homeowners Association, and the Blanche Ely Foundation.
An avid fan of America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys, Floyd was a dedicated member of the South Florida Travel Squad and rarely missed a Monday night game.
A loving husband of 31 years and a hardworking man, Floyd was a truck driver by trade, a football referee by passion, and a South Florida Traveling Club member for leisure. And above all, he was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan!
The Measure of a Great Man
Floyd will always be remembered for his kind nature.
